What is False Reject and Why is it a Problem?

There is little doubt that those who have implemented a fingerprint identification system have experienced a “false reject”. If you are familiar with this term, you know all too well the frustration that it can cause.

A false reject (or false negative) in terms of biometric technology occurs when the system fails to identify an enrolled user. In other words, although a biometric template exists for the user attempting to be identified, the biometric system returns a “no match found” result.

The probability that a biometrics system will produce a false reject is known as the false reject rate (FRR). The FRR can be an important variable in the process of selecting a vendor to provide a fingerprint identification system. The simple reason: no one likes to be frustrated.

You know the typical scenario. You’ve implemented the fingerprint identification system for employee time and attendance to prevent “buddy punching”. You have USB fingerprint readers plugged into PCs that are running fingerprint software which is interfaced with a time clock application. An employee approaches a PC to clock in, scans his/her print, and is denied.

False reject is an issue that exists across the entire biometrics industry and can be common in 1:N fingerprint identification systems.
