\nThe Nursery Rhyme and its Application to Biometrics<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Most of us are probably familiar with the popular nursery rhyme \u201cThe Itsy Bitsy Spider<\/a><\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0 It goes like this:<\/p>\n

The itsy bitsy spider went up the water spout.
\nDown came the rain, and washed the spider out.
\nUp came the sun, and dried up all the rain,
\nand the itsy bitsy spider went up the spout again.<\/p>\n

Wow.\u00a0 That is one resilient spider and it got us thinking\u2026this spider reminds us a lot of biometric technology.<\/p>\n

As biometrics for identification has evolved from forensics into government and enterprise applications, there have been growing pains along the way.\u00a0 Fingerprint technology<\/a><\/strong> was the first \u201cspider\u201d modality to hit the mainstream and as it climbed the biometric \u201cwater (aka market) spout\u201d end users realized that it had certain limitations.\u00a0 For example, environmental conditions and fingerprint integrity limited its ability to identify a certain percentage of the population and as a result, end users began to seek a biometric modality that would identify 100% of their demographic.\u00a0 The \u201crain\u201d of dirt, grease, grime, cuts, scrapes, scars, age, ethnicity and other conditions washed out the fingerprint spider as not a one-size-fits-all solution.\u00a0 However, it still had plenty of applicability and started to re-climb the biometric market spout.<\/p>\n

Out came the vascular “sun” and dried up all of the issues that plagued fingerprint technology to allow the finger vein<\/a> <\/strong>and palm vein<\/a><\/strong> spiders (albeit different spiders, but biometric spiders nonetheless) to start climbing the biometric market spout alongside the fingerprint spider. \u00a0Thus far, the weather has been quite sunny and there is no rain in the forecast to fall and wash the vascular spiders to the ground.\u00a0 Vascular biometrics is enjoying a surge in end user adoption demonstrating a high tolerance for skin surface problems such as dryness, roughness, moisture or scarring.<\/p>\n

Note \u2013 There are other biometric spiders currently crawling up the water spout such as iris<\/a><\/strong>, retina, voice, hand geometry and facial recognition, but they have not quite been as widely accepted for commercial adoption.<\/em><\/p>\n

Biometrics and Resiliency<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Just like the itsy bitsy spider, biometrics has proven to be very resilient.\u00a0 As biometric performance and technology adapts to market conditions through refinements, enhancements and modifications it continues to demonstrate diverse applicability and post significant returns on investment<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 From workforce management<\/a><\/strong>, healthcare<\/a><\/strong>, retail point of sale<\/a><\/strong>, public safety<\/a><\/strong>, and membership management<\/a><\/strong>, biometrics continues to grow and the forecast is a continued ascent through many global government and commercial applications.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s rewrite one of our favorite nursery rhymes for the biometric industry:<\/p>\n

The itsy bitsy biometric spider went up the market spout.
\nDown came conditions, and washed the spider out.
\nUp came refinements, to solve the problems,
\nand the itsy bitsy biometric spider went up the market spout again.<\/p>\n
