{"id":261,"date":"2010-11-24T11:27:43","date_gmt":"2010-11-24T16:27:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.m2sys.com\/blog\/?p=261"},"modified":"2024-12-18T02:40:01","modified_gmt":"2024-12-18T07:40:01","slug":"continued-fallout-from-the-recent-nrc-report-on-the-fallibility-of-biometric-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.m2sys.com\/blog\/biometric-resources\/continued-fallout-from-the-recent-nrc-report-on-the-fallibility-of-biometric-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Continued Fallout From The Recent NRC Report On The \u201cFallibility\u201d Of Biometric Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yesterday, Leischen Stelter from S<strong>ecurity Director News\u00a0<\/strong>published an article that once again put the recent NRC Report on the \u201cfallibility\u201d of biometric technology in the spotlight.\u00a0 You can find a link to the article <strong>here.<\/strong> Through an interview with Mark Visbal, Director of Research and Technology for the Security Industry Association (SIA), it was made clear that the SIA\u2019s views on the NRC Report are counter to the findings that the Report suggested.\u00a0 When asked to comment on the NRC\u2019s claim that:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c\u201chuman recognition systems are inherently probabilistic and hence inherently fallible; the chance of error can be made small but not eliminated. System designers and operators should anticipate and plan for the occurrence of errors, even if errors are expected to be infrequent.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Saying that the NRC Report was based on \u201coutdated data\u201d Mr. Visbal responded:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cIn the security world, biometrics are accepted as a viable solution for authorization and identification,\u201d he said. \u201cBiometrics are a game changer, it really is, because it irrefutably ties the embedder of a biometric to that identity. Are there problems? Yes. But, will it get better?
