An automated biometric identification system, or ABIS, is utilized for large-scale biometric authentication and duplication. An ABIS is a biometric search system that compares one sample to a database of samples with multiple biometric templates in a one-to-many comparison. It allows for the comparison of a live sample to a large number of existing biometric templates to locate a record of a specific individual and confirm their identification.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are different modalities of biometric identification systems, and the most common one is AFIS. It stands for automated fingerprint identification system. Like fingerprint identification, you can also use Iris, face, and vein identification systems as the common biometric modalities. You can use one or multiple biometric modalities for identification or verification.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Four to five years back, implementing these systems had to be done on-site, and it required a huge amount of IT infrastructure investment and maintenance. An ABIS evaluates a person’s biometric characteristics, such as a fingerprint, face, or iris, available in the current biometric database, also known as biometric templates. The fingerprint, face, and iris of each person are all unique. This allows biometric markers to be linked to a specific individual. A biometric search compares the physical properties to those of existing templates using advanced algorithms.<\/span><\/p>\n

The biometric sample has to be enrolled in the database using biometric scanners. Depending on which modality you are using, different biometric devices are available. The identification is made using two methods which are:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1. 1:1 Matching<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

By verifying a recorded biometric template to a database of templates, 1:1 biometric identification matching authenticates a user’s identity. Before comparing a saved biometric template to a live scan, the individual conducting the match must first input a personally identifiable credential name, ID, date of birth, gender, etc., before the comparison may take place.\u00a0<\/span>Because of this, personally identifiable credentials relate to a specific database registration template. In short, 1:1 matching confirms a person\u2019s identity by verifying who they claim to be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2. 1:N Matching<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

A one-to-many biometric identity matching system compares a user’s registered biometric template to all recorded biometric templates in the system in real-time. Only the user’s biometric credentials are required, and this matching type is the only true de-duplication technique. Once a user enrolls, 1:N biometric matching types ensure that it is impossible to generate a duplicate record for that user. This type of matching ensures whether the person is enrolled in a specific group or not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
