CISCO’s Jail Management
Software, JAMS
Effectively managing a safe and secure prison facility
is a key element in maintaining the welfare of the community.
Recent studies have reported that the number of occupied jail beds
has been steadily increasing over the years, and that the number was up to
96% of total capacity in 2006.
CISCO Software provides computer
applications and related services for public safety agencies nationwide.
Their jail management software, JAMS
is an on-line, interactive jail booking and management system that provides
information on incarcerated adults and juveniles. JAMS performs the
information storage and retrieval functions the are necessary for the
efficient management of jail records. The
software has been integrated with M2SYS’ cutting-edge Bio-Plugin™
biometric technology to provide the utmost security and peace of mind.
Bio-Plugin™ enables software companies to
quickly integrate a complete, seamless fingerprint recognition system,
including a high-performance 1:N identification engine. Bio-Plugin™
eliminates the system dependencies, extensive development, and specialized
knowledge of biometric complexities inherent to fingerprint
SDKs.
The fingerprint system is being used to verify inmate’s identification in
several ways. When inmates are
first booked, they are enrolled in the system by scanning their fingerprint
a few times to capture the image. If
the inmate has been priorly incarcerated, the biometric software will alert
the booker. This feature helps
to eliminate the hassle of an inmate falsifying their identification
information, or not giving any identification at all.
JAMS also utilizes the fingerprint technology when managing an inmate’s
personal property, visitor activity and meal summary.
One of the most important features is the ability to manage medical
information and medicine distribution. Inmates
often lie about their identity to receive medicine that is attractive to
them. With the fingerprint
recognition technology in place, an inmate can simply scan his finger to
retrieve his medical information and receive his medicine.
Because each fingerprint is unique, no inmate can fool the system to
wrongfully receive medicine.
Inmate movements throughout the jail can also be tracked by placing
fingerprint readers at key areas or rooms in a correctional facility.
Security is raised due to this increase in inmate accountability.
At any point in time, the system can report an inmate’s location
within the facility.
Verifying inmate identification is crucial at the time of final release. Often,
an inmate will make a deal to swap ID bracelets with other inmate who is to
be released earlier. This is
detrimental to the safety of the community.
At release time, the Bio-Plugin fingerprint solution performs a 1:1
identification verification on the inmate being released.
If the fingerprint scanned matched the fingerprint stored in the
system, the inmate is correct and can be released.
If the fingerprint scanned does not match that of the inmate, then
the inmate has falsified his identification and will not be released.
Due to the integration of M2SYS’ unique biometric solution technology into
JAMS jail management software, security concerns in jails are alleviated and
the safety of the community is increased.
